Avocados can be baked, fried, and grilled, so heat does not necessarily hurt them - it's exposure to air that turns them brown. I've only used avocado in soup as a topping, but that certainly does not mean it can't be done, just that I haven't seen it! You probably don't want to heat it too long, bring to a simmer for a few minutes.
